Title of Document: ANALOG VLSI CIRCUITS FOR BIOSENSORS, NEURAL SIGNAL PROCESSING AND PROSTHETICS. Alfred M. Haas Doctor of Philosophy, 2009 Directed By: Professor Martin Peckerar, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Stroke, spinal cord injury and neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS and Parkinson’s debilitate their victims by suffocating, cleaving communication between, and/or poisoning entire populations of geographically correlated neurons. Although the damage associated with such injury or disease is typically irreversible, recent advances in implantable neural prosthetic devices offer hope for the restoration of lost sensory, cognitive and motor functions by remapping those functions onto healthy cortical regions. The research presented in this thesis is directed toward developing enabling technology for totally implantable neural prosthetics that could one day restore lost sensory, cognitive and motor function to the victims of debilitating neural

CMOS VLSI Hyperbolic Tangent Function & its Derivative Circuits for Neuron Implementation

The hyperbolic tangent function and its derivative are key essential element in analog signal processing and especially in analog VLSI implementation of neuron of artificial neural networks. The main conditions of these types of circuits are the small silicon area, and the low power consumption. The objective of this paper is to study and design CMOS VLSI hyperbolic tangent function and its der...

NESP2: a Low Power Analog NEural Signal Processor with Analog Weight Storage

Analog Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) could be the core of an "intelligent" signal processor, with the today used digital processing replaced by a raw "data driven" methodology. Characteristic of this approach is: analog input/output: signals don't need A/D and D/A converters; speed: an analog system can be faster than a digital or a mixed-mode one; effectiveness: ANNs already demonstrated t...

Modeling and Simulation of Substrate Noise in Mixed-Signal Circuits Applied to a Special VCO

The mixed-signal circuits with both analog and digital blocks on a single chip have wide applications in communication and RF circuits. Integrating these two blocks can cause serious problems especially in applications requiring fast digital circuits and high performance analog blocks. Fast switching in digital blocks generates a noise which can be introduced to analog circuits by the common su...

Synaptic Plasticity and Spike-based Computation in VLSI Networks of Integrate-and-Fire Neurons

Neuromorphic circuits are being used to develop a new generation of computing technologies based on the organizing principles of the biological nervous system. Within this context, we present neuromorphic circuits for implementing massively parallel VLSI networks of integrate-and-fire neurons with adaptation and spike-based plasticity mechanisms. We describe both analog continuous time and digi...

An efficient CAD tool for High-Level Synthesis of VLSI digital transformers

Digital transformers are considered as one of the digital circuits being widely used in signal and data processing systems, audio and video processing, medical signal processing as well as telecommunication systems. Transforms such as Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT), Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) and Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) are among the ones being commonly used in this area. As an illu...
